The Anniversary Concert.
To celebrate our 50 years of music making we have a very
special concert lined up complete with birthday cake! We are
hoping
that as many previous orchestra members as possible will be able to
come and enjoy a chance to listen to the orchestra as it is today and
socialise about “old times”.
We will be performing well-known favourites Karelia Suite by Sibelius
and Grieg’s
Wedding Day at Troldhaugen along with the
stunning marimba concerto by Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro and a
specially commissioned work for the anniversary, Recipe for Disaster by
Auckland composer Claire
Cowan.
Marimba Soloist Yoshiko
The soloist in the concerto
is brilliant marimba player Yoshiko
Tsuruta, who won the Victoria University Concerto
competition last year
with her performance of this concerto. She has continued to excel with
a winning performance on March 8 2008 in the Christchurch Concerto
Competition.
At the Registered Music Teachers’
Conference in January, Yoshiko delighted all with her
involvement in
the music.
Claire Cowan's commissioned work
The Recipe for Disaster has been composed for a split orchestra. One orchestra, split in two, with two separate conductors! You can understand the composer’s title now. We will have our previous conductor Stuart Douglas as the second conductor for this effective piece. With sections called “Exotic spices”, “Stravinsky strikes back” and “Cheesy pop” there are plenty of surprises in this work.
SOUNZ Community
Commission. Claire's
composition was commissioned by SOUNZ as the 2007 recipient of an
annual award. "The SOUNZ Community Commission is sponsored by an
anonymous donor and administered by SOUNZ. The commission encourages
community groups (amateur musicians) to work closely with a
professional composer." In the
announcement last year, you can read why SOUNZ were so
enthusiastic, about both Claire
and the work. This
work is now one of the many New Zealand compositions
available from SOUNZ.
