Overview

The 2011 Symphonic Workshop Weekend featured the exciting Stravinsky Firebird Suite,  the lyrical Debussy Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune and  Wagner's Pilgrim's March scored for brass ensemble. After sectional practices with tutoring from NZSO players on the Saturday, the orchestra rose to new heights and  produced convincing performances of these difficult works on Sunday.

Leaning into conducting 

The orchestra played two symphonic works. The first was Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. This gave the woodwind. and flutes in particular. an opportunity to play some of the great orchestral solos.

The second work was Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. which provided a rousing finish to the  final concert. This concert was open to friends and relatives who appreciated being up close to the lively performance.

After a full-on weekend of music, participants left invigorated and already looking forward to next years's workshop.
