The concert opens with Franz von Suppé's Overture to "Poet and Peasant".Suppe is known for his light operas in the Romantic style and the overtures in particular
are a popular part of concert repertoire today. Following on from the"Light Cavalry" Overture
in our last concert, we will be presenting another of his lively works.
French Flair will
then be apparent in Saint-Saëns' "Introduction and Rondo
Capriccioso". Pictured at right is Malavika Gopal of the NZSO
who will perform the virtuoso violin part.The second half of the concert is Cezar Franck's "Symphony in D minor". This Romantic style Symphony of great beauty has three movements. It was one of his last compositions.
