My Fair Lady
Hutt: Saturday 16th April at 7:30 pm
St James Church, Woburn
Road, Lower Hutt,
This will be a semi-staged version of the musical; Live singers, dialogue, and a full orchestra, but minimal staging.
My Fair Lady is a 1956 Learner and Loewe Musical set in Edwardian London, which is when the original Shaw play (Pygmalion) was written. This year is the 60th anniversary of the opening of the musical on Broadway. No-one then or now sees it odd that a play about earlier English class structures should debut in New York. Since then, it has played just about everywhere else as well, and where it hasn't, the movie has.
The great songs from this musical have become familiar classics.
