Programme
This is a semi-staged version of the musical; Live singers, dialogue, and a full orchestra, but minimal staging.South Pacific is a 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein Musical set on an island in the South Pacific during World War II. It was based on a Michener (before he became famous) series of short stories. We are presenting it to commemorate 70 years since the end of the last of the two World Wars. However, although fighting is a factor in the drama, much of the character interaction centers on racial bias.
The musical was a massive hit, and the songs continue to be popular. You should recognise among others...
Some Enchanted Evening, I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy,
Bali Ha'i, and I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair
The need in this last song for the lead heroine (Mary Martin) to wash her hair 8 times (on stage) a week resulted in a preference for shorter hair and softer shampoos that affected wider American culture. Resolving racism took decades. South Pacific was widely popular throughout that period.
